Announcing the special celebration of the 10th anniversary of the annual Heiva I Kaua`i Iaorana Tahiti, August 6 and 7 2011 at Kapa`a Beach Park, 4-1464 Kuhio Highway, Kapa`a, Kaua`i, Hawai`i. This year’s Heiva features exhibition dancing by Te Vai Ura Nui from O`ahu, performing exciting Otea, Aparima and Ahuroa dances on both days. This well-known Hawai`i group has won many awards, including 2008 overall winner Heiva I Honolulu, and first place in 2010 for Mamaru`au Ahupurotu.

Heiva I Kaua`i is an international Tahitian dance and drumming competition which includes solo and group competitors from throughout Hawai`i and the Mainland and features multi-cultural exhibition dancing, singing and an extensive craft fair with an array of items from south and western Pacific islands. Tahitian dance and drumming and Samoan fire knife dance workshops are scheduled for 5 PM Saturday and 8:30 AM Sunday. Call 808-822-9447 to register.

Solo dance competitors must register and obtain competition numbers and instructions between 4 and 6 PM Friday at Kapa`a Beach Park.

On Saturday morning, a traditional welcoming ceremony will start the festivities. Gates open to the public at 9 AM with solo competition beginning at 10 AM. Solo categories include traditional Otea vahine and tane, for junior, senior and master (age 26+) divisions. Group categories include Otea, Aparima, Ahuroa, and Tahitian drumming. Group competition is scheduled to begin Saturday afternoon and will continue through Sunday.  Please note that schedules will be adjusted to accommodate the number of entries.

Sunday, gates open at 9 AM and exhibition dancing begins at 10 AM with group competition continuing. Sunday will end with solo, group and drumming award presentations.

Festival participants will enjoy a weekend of unique Tahitian entertainment, browse through an array of Polynesian arts and crafts, savor delicious local foods, participate in craft making and dance and coconut husking contests.

Admission is $5 a day at the door. Children age 6 and under are free.
